Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) - The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering is an all India examination conducted jointly by the IITs and the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. Admission to Postgraduate Courses with MHRD Scholarship/Assistant ship in Engineering/ Technology/ Architecture/Pharmacy at Colleges/Institutes in the country are open only to those who qualify in GATE.

Qualifying GATE is no guarantee for either admission or scholarship/ assistant ship as this is a decision taken by the institution selecting a candidate. Some colleges of engineering specify GATE as mandatory qualification for admission of self financing students to the PG courses. Passing the GATE however is considered for the award of Junior Research Fellowships in CSIR Laboratories and may also be considered when applying to a foreign university
