About IIT Guwahati
Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati, the sixth
member of the IIT fraternity, was established in 1994. The academic
programme of IIT Guwahati commenced in 1995.
At present the Institute has eleven departments
covering all the major engineering and science disciplines, offering B.
Tech., B. Des., M. Tech., Ph.D. and M.Sc. programmes. Within a short
period of time, IIT Guwahati has been able to build up the necessary
infrastructure for carrying out advanced research and has been equipped
with state-of-the-art scientific and engineering instruments.
Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati's campus is
on a sprawling 285 hectares plot of land on the north bank of the river
Brahmaputra around 20 kms. from the heart of the city. With the
majestic Brahmaputra on one side, and with hills and vast open spaces
on others, the campus provides an ideal setting for learning. While the
campus construction programme will terminate at the end of the tenth
five year plan, students' hostels, faculty and staff quarters, and a
guest house have already been built.

Location
The Institute can be reached by road, rail or air.
Since it is located on the outskirts of the city of Guwahati, it is
well connected to other parts of the country by road, rail or air.
Guwahati
is well connected by air, rail and road with the rest of the country.
There are direct air services from/to New Delhi and Kolkata with
connectivity to all major cities in the country and direct train
services from/to all major cities in the country and direct train
services from/to all the metropolis and other major cities. Indian
Airlines, Air Sahara, Jet Airways, Deccan Air and SpiceJet operate
regular flights to and from Guwahati.
It
is around 20 km from the heart of the city and around 35 min drive from
the airport. To reach the institute from the city, there is the
institute bus service that runs regularly to and from the city.
Facilities
The
Institute has most of the basic infrastructure in place, with some of
the facilities to be ready by the end of the tenth plan period (year
2007). The 74,000 square metre academic complex houses the academic
departments, their laboratories, classrooms, etc. An administrative
building has the offices of the Institute.

History
The history of IIT Guwahati traces its roots to the 1985 Assam Accord
signed between the AASU and the Govt. of India, which mentions the
general improvement in education facilities in Assam and specifically
the setting up of an IIT.
IITG was established in 1994 by an act of parliament and its academic
programme commenced in 1995. IITG admitted its first batch of students
into its Bachelor of Technology programme in 1995. The selection
process was the same as that of all IITs, i.e. through the Joint
Entrance Examination. In 1998, the first batch of students were
accepted into the Master of Technology program through the GATE.
In the present day, IIT Guwahati functions completely in a state of the
art and generously endowed campus both in infrastructure and natural
beauty. The campus of IITG is situated on the northern banks of
Brahmaputra and abuts the North Guwahati town of Amingaon. The IIT
continues to develop and diversify each year, while maintaining its
stated aim of improving standards in education and research. Owing to
its establishment in the early 1990s, the institute boasts of providing
the best and the latest engineering and computing resources in the
entire country.
Academics
Currently IIT Guwahati houses the following departments :
* Department of Biotechnology
* Department of Chemical Engineering
* Department of Chemistry
* Department of Civil Engineering
* Department of Computer Science and Engineering
* Department of Design
* Department of Electronics & Communication Engineering
* Department of Humanities|Humanities and Social Sciences
* Department of Mathematics
* Department of Mechanical Engineering
* Department of Physics
The aforementioned departments of the Institute offer B. Tech., B.
Des., M. Tech., Ph.D. and M.Sc. programmes. The strength of the
institute like other IITs is its exceptional undergraduate (B. Tech)
program which produces world class engineers who have both excelled in
technology and leadership positions in India, and as researchers and
entrepreneurs worldwide. A snapshot of IITG placement statistics may be
seen at: http://www.iitg.ernet.in/placement.
IIT Guwahati was also the first IIT to introduce design as one of the
disciplines at Undergraduate level. The Department of Design (DoD) at
the institute awards the degree of B.Des. (Bachelor of Design) on
completion of the undergraduate academic program.
Presently there are about 2300 students on rolls, 215 faculty
Research Centers
IIT Guwahati has rapidly assembled the necessary infrastructure for
carrying out advanced scientific and engineering research and is
equipped with state of the art technical equipment and aids.
Research continues to be a thrust at IITG as the Govt. Of India looks
to the IITs to develop graduate programs that can replicate the success
of the vastly successful undergraduate one. IITG is currently home to
six Centres of Research.
* Centre for Educational Technology
* Centre for Nanotechnology
* Centre for Mass Media Communication
* Central Instruments Facility
* Centre for Energy
* Centre for the Environment
IIT Guwahati has the distinction among the IIT fraternity, of having
